The tree that never had to fight For sun and sky and air and light, But stood out in the open plain, And always got its share of rain, Never became a forest king, But lived and died a scrubby thing.   The man who never had to toil, To gain and farm his patch of soil, Who never had to win his share Of sun and sky and light and air, Never became a manly man But lived and died as he began.   Good timber does not grow with ease: The stronger wind, the stronger trees; The further sky, the greater length; The more the storm, the more the strength. By sun and cold, by rain and snow, In trees and men good timbers grow.   Where thickest lies the forest growth, We find the patriarchs of both. And they hold counsel with the stars Whose broken branches show the scars Of many winds and much of strife. This is the common law of life. - Good Timber by Douglas Malloch

Traits that differentiates the innovators from the rest

Innovators and Revolutionaries tend to have a very particular mix of traits - Particularly openness, conscientiousness and agreeableness.

Innovators have to be open, they have to be able to imagine things that others cannot and to be willing to challenge their own preconceptions.

Innovators have to be Conscientious, they should be able to have the discipline and persistence to carry out their brilliant ideas. else they just become dreamers who dream of brilliant ideas but lacks the discipline and persistence in executing them.

But its very crucial that innovators need to be disagreeable, They are people willing to take social risks - to do things that others might disapprove of. That's not easy society frowns on disagreeableness. We humans are hardwired to seek the approval of those around us. Innovators don't worry about hurting people's feelings and disturbing the social structure while trying to putting their idea's forward. In short they are not people pleasers.

As George shaw puts it - "The reasonable man adapts himself to the world, The unreasonable one persists in trying to adapt the world to himself. Therefore all progress depends on the unreasonable man"
